the bullionr life
Well, that's a good question! Of course, I figure many of you reading this post probably have no idea what I am talking about and that's okay :)
So, let's discover the answer together! 'Cause if you are like me I have always wanted to know "What the heck are PGMs anyway"?
Now, for some strange reason that "Do You Know Your ABCs?" song came to mind as I sat down to pen this post! And, I have no earthly idea why! But, I know my ABCs, right?
So, I put on my Precious Metals hat and started to sing! LOL! And, the first clue I thought was that "P" must be for "Platinum"!
But to figure out the rest...
First, I'd Had To Take A Look At History:
I really had no idea that Platinum has been found in objects that date from 700 BC, most notably as a coating for the Egyptian sarcophagus known as The Casket of Thebes.2
And, for 16th century Spanish conquistadores, platinum was an impediment in the search for gold!
OMG! :0 Be Still My Heart! Darn, that Platinum! LOL! :)
Okay, I admit I was a little done at that historical fact! LOL! :)
But, I decided to keep digging anyway...
So, I jumped forward to the 18th century, when European scientists began studying the metal in earnest and were originally confounded by its properties, such as a high melting point and a resistance to corrosion.3 Yet, it wasn't until the 19th century that English scientists finally developed a means of refining platinum and discovered palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, and ruthenium. (Remember, I posted about Palladium just recently. Check it out!)
As, for the other metals,....I don't know about you but I'm having flashbacks to high school science class and just trying to pronounce the combination of those metals' names all together is sort of a nightmare on a carnival ride called 'tongue twister'! LOL! :)
Okay, I digress...
Now, Platinum and these other metals I just listed above all sit near each other on the Periodic Table and are known together as the Platinum Group Metals, or more commonly as PGMs. 4
So, now we all know our PGMs.....
But, Did You Also Know?1
And, on that note...,
Now That We're Talking Coins:
Let's Talk About The Beauty Of Platinum Coins! :)
In 1997, the U.S. Mint introduced the Platinum American Eagle coin. It remains the only platinum bullion coin the U.S. government guarantees for weight, content, and .9995 purity.
